| Gruta do Lago Azul |
Gruta de Lago AzulDiscovered by an Indian from the Terena tribe in 1924, the cavern contains a blue lagoon the size of which makes it one of the largest flooded caverns known on the planet. IN 1992 a Franco-brasilian expedition of cave divers discovered a number of mammal fossils including the Saber-tooth Tiger and the Megatherium americanum (means "giant beast" and refers to a creature most closely related to the modern day tree sloth), which lived during the Plestocine Era - 6000 to 10,000 years ago. After a descent of 100 meters (300 feet), you find yourself at a lagoon of intensely blue water, the depth of which is estimated at 90 meters (300 feet). The cavern if full of stalactites and stalagmites of different forms and sizes which have drawn the attention of tourists and researchers from around the world. No one knows for sure the source of the waters that fill the lagoon; but, many believe a subterranean river feeds it. The cavern is located twenty kilometers from Bonito and lasts about three hours. Pantanal Expeditions offers shared van service to the Cavern each Wednesday and Saturday morning; however, it is necessary to book in advance to use this service. On Wednesdays we offer the option to spend the afternoon at the Barra do Sucuri, Praia do Sucuri or the Praia da Figueira. On Saturday afternoons we offer the Parque das Cachoeiras with our standard van service. For more personalized service, closed groups, or to visit the Gruta de Lago Azul on other days, we offer charter van service.
