Pantanal of Poconé

The Pantanal of Poconé is delimited, to the North by the city of Poconé, the highest area of the savanna, to the south with the Sâo Lourenço River, the border of the Pantanal of Paiaguás, to the east by the Pantanal Barão de Melgaço, and to the west by the Paraguay River.

The area is predominated by vast bogs, complemented by plants from the juncales and cyperaceae families, as well as áreas of savanna and forest.  Plants from the Amazonian biome occur less frequently than in the Pantanal of Cáceres.  However, one can encounter the majestic giant waterlily, Victoria amazônica (Nymphaeaceae) floating in meanders of the Cuiabá River and the watercourses along the Transpantaneira Highway.  The fields are composed of "campos sujos" (about 15% of trees and brush, which generally are concentrated in vegetation "islands" called murundus) and "campos limpos" consisting of grassy vegetation.  The secondary canopy of the savannas of this region is extremely dense, which gives this region less usable pasture area.  The soil is essentially Clay.  This type of soil, predominant in the Pantanal of Poconé, causes a strict soil-plant ecological relationship.  One such asssociation which occurs regularly is in Poconé is the cambarazal (Vochysia divergens), another is the Heart-of-flame (Bromélia balansae).  A species abundant amidst the gallery forest along the Cuiabá River is the Piúva, or Ipê roxo  (Tabebuia impetiginosa Bignoniaceae ou Tabebuia avellanedae).
