Pantanal de Paiaguás
The Pantanal of Paiaguás is bordered on the north by the Pantanal Barão de Melgação, seperated by the Piquiri River, the south, the regions of Nhecolândia Paraguai; to the east, the Sâo Geronimo hills at the end of the central plateau, and to the west, the forests of the Bolivian border.
The vegetation of the Paiaguas is principaly savanna (Allem 1977b, Pott 1982a). Considerable areas are covered with dense savanna that doesn´t constitute the cover of a forest canopy, which augments the area of useful pasture. The herbacious stratum and forrage area of these dense savannas is principally composed of capim-mimoso (Axonopus purpusii) e capim-bananal (Axonopus compressus). Here, ponds and salt flats practically disappear and are replaced by corixas and river branches. From an areal view, savanna and dense savanna prodrude punctuated here and there by gallery forests and fields. This region is composed of sandy silt and sandy soils, acentuated predominantly by the second type. There are considerable superfícies as well covered by clay soils, almost always near springs and underground rivers.
