Pantanal of Nabileque
The pantanal of Nablique is bordered, to the north, by the Pantanal of Abobral, to the south, the Chaquenha forests of Porto Murtinho; to the east, the Pantanal of Miranda; and to the West, the forests situated on the Bolivia-Paraguay border. It is below the juristiction of Corumbá, a district within the municipality. The area known as Jacadigo is also included in this Pantanal.
The vegetation of Nablique is is a type of savanna; however, it doesn´t include some of the woody specicies found in Nhecolândia and the Paiaguás. In their place is the Carandá Palm (Copernicia alba), which when dominant forms a forest known as a “Carandazal”.
The physiognomy of this region of the Pantanal, as well as those of Porto Murtinho and Miranda, have a lot in common with the physonomy of the Chaco. The Pantanal of Nablique can be interpreted as an extention Paraguayan-bolivian Chaco biome.
The Nablique region is one of the first to receive the scourge of the rains, in large part because of its impermeable and slow draining clay soil. The arrival of the first rains in October is a cause for preoccupation, as by the second half of November, transport becomes precarious, and it becomes extremely difficult for a motorized vehicle to pass along the paths of this area.
The soils of Nabileque are principally dark organic clays. The grasses that occur here are for the most part distinct from those that occur in Nhecolândia and Paiaguás, the edaphic element being the principal; but, by no means the only cause. Nablique is know for its excellent grasses; and in fact, has an appreciable number of pastures. The grasses include Paspalum virgatum, which is hardy in clay soils, Paspalum plicatulum, Panicum laxum, Hymenachne amplexicaulis, Leptochloa virgata, etc. This stratum of Grass grows in the interstices left by the forest layer. Above all, the Pantanal of Nabileque appears to be forested, such is the concentration of palm trees. On the ground, however, there is sufficient space for natural pasture to grow.
